Zevenbergen and Deboer Cash in on Rapid Speedway Specials, Hess Notches Another Win While Gaul Gets His First

It was a night of specials and extra money Friday night at the Rapid Speedway. The scheduled Sportsman Special and the make-up Stock Car Shootout brought a great field of cars to the raceway.
The night started with the Sportsman Special and some extra money up for grabs saw Rock Rapids’ Roger Deboer race from 5th to 1st in short order and went on to win his second feature of the season. The battle was for second as Brian and Bill Kroon moved through the field and the father-son duo would race side by side throughout the race until the last corner where Brian would bobble and Bill would capitalize and take second at the line. Tyler Bradley would finish fourth ahead of Leon Sneller. Deboer has worked hard this season and his car is getting fast at the right time. “I’ve always wanted to win one of these (Specials), said Deboer. The Kroon’s picked up the heat wins.
The USRA Hobby Stocks found a new winner in Eric Gaul. Gaul normally a stock car competitor, but some unfortunate luck caused him to switch to his Hobby Stock and it seemed to work. Gaul would take his front row starting spot and open up a big lead early in the race with great action behind him until a caution at the halfway point would bunch up the field. Gaul would once again use the high line and pull away from the field and go onto his first win of the season. Cory Kelderman would garner his best finish of the year as well in the runner-up spot ahead of Dylan Fitzpatrick, Dawson Deboer, and Brady Klaassen. “I bent up my stock car a few weeks ago and we had this sitting around and thought we’d bring it out,” said the driver from Rushmore, MN. Alex Wiertzma would win the B feature while Tyler Schlumbohm, Jaime Songer, and Fitzpatrick would win the heat races.
Brock Hess has had a great season at Rapid Speedway and Friday night was no different. Hess would take advantage of the pole position draw and runaway to a half straight away lead and his 5th win of 2019 at the track. “I can’t thank the track guys enough for all their hard work getting this track ready, I love being to come out and do this with my family,” said Hess. Derek VanVeldhuizen would grab second ahead of Kevin Joachim, Lyndon Johnson, and Tyler Johnson. Heat wins went to Jackson Mulder, Tyler Johnson, and Joachim.
The featured class of the night saw 25 USRA Stock Cars check in for action with $1150 going to winner. Rushmore, MN driver Jim Larson grabbed the early lead in the race, but it wasn’t long before Elijah Zevenbergen would start to challenge and take the lead away on lap 3. After a restart Larson and Zevenbergen would go at it side by side with Larson low and Zevenbergen high. Finally the 66z would clear himself and set sail on the field. Using all lanes of the race track to work through traffic Zevenbergen would show why he is one of the best stock car drivers around and take the big win. “It’s been a little over a year since I’ve been here and I’m glad to be back.” Larson would hang on for second followed by Colby Klaassen in third. Chad Overgaard would charge from 11th to 4th and Roger Verdoorn rounded out the top 5. The heat wins went to Zevenbergen, Overgaard, Josh Kelderman, and Colton Arends.
Next week the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) will join the field with Iron Man Stock Cars and Bmod Series.
